Early January called for a proper day out, so we joined the Off The Beaten Track 4x4 Club, friends and family for a run out to Trekoskraal on the West Coast. With its white sand tracks, low coastal fynbos and rocky shoreline, it is the kind of place that makes the drive there part of the day.
Camping is no longer allowed at Trekoskraal, so this was not an overnight setup. It was simply a beach day: vehicles in, awnings out, chairs in the shade and everyone settled in for a long, unhurried afternoon by the sea.
Sand Tracks and Sea Air
The group made its way through the soft sand in convoy, with the Atlantic on one side and the rugged coast opening up ahead. It was a gentle reminder that a 4x4 outing does not have to be about covering big distances or tackling technical obstacles. Sometimes the route is simply the best way to reach a good spot with good people.

Awnings Out, Time Slowed Down
Once everyone was parked, the vehicles became the base for the day. Awnings went up, cool boxes came out and the beach quickly turned into a shared lounge. There was food on the braai, plenty of conversation and enough shade for the kids and adults to settle in comfortably.

There was no campsite to pack down the next morning and no schedule to chase. Just a good January day with the club, friends and family, made better by sand under the tyres and the sea close by.
