The best trips are not always planned. Right at the beginning of the year, two vehicles happened to be in the Strand area. A few messages later, the plan had made itself: meet at Kogel Bay before the sun went down.
There was no route briefing, no big convoy and no packed itinerary. Just a quick run along the coast, with the mountains on one side and False Bay opening up on the other.

Parked Up for Sunset
By the time we arrived, the afternoon light was doing exactly what it does best out there. We parked up near the beach, opened the awnings, set out a few chairs, and let the evening slow down.
Two vehicles, drinks and snacks, and enough time to catch up while the sun dropped toward the water. Nothing elaborate; exactly the point.

A Good Way to Start the Year
More friends joined us as the light turned golden, and an accidental afternoon became a proper little meetup. It was a reminder that an overland day does not need a long distance or a complicated plan to be worth it. Sometimes the right call is simply to point the vehicle toward the coast and see who is free.

As the sun set, we packed up, said our goodbyes, and headed home. A quick, unplanned Kogel Bay sunset was a fitting way to begin 2024.
