Spitzkop Viewpoint - March 2023

Spitzkop Viewpoint, Ysternek Nature Reserve, Knysna, Western Cape

Not far from Knysna, the road to Spitzkop trades the coast for the cool shade of the indigenous forest. It is an easy place to overlook when the Garden Route is full of well-known stops, but the climb is its own small adventure and the view from the top earns every corner.

The route begins from Knysna on the R339 towards Uniondale. The turnoff is about 4 km outside town in the Port Elizabeth direction, and Diepwalle Forest Station sits about 15 km farther along. From there, the signposted route winds through the Ysternek Nature Reserve, moving between dense forest and more open fynbos as it starts to gain height.

The Climb

The approach felt properly remote without being far from town. The forest road was narrow beneath the trees, with ferns and thick vegetation crowding its edges. Then the last section changed character: a steep, pale gravel track, winding around the mountain towards the viewpoint.

Visit Knysna advises allowing at least an hour from Diepwalle and describes the final kilometre as a slow, narrow and winding gravel climb. A normal sedan can make it in suitable conditions, but higher clearance is better, and the route deserves real care after rain. Sarabi was right at home on it, and the slow climb gave us time to take in how quickly the forest fell away behind us.

Clear-Day Reward

At 918 m, Spitzkop is the highest peak accessible by vehicle in the Garden Route district. We arrived on a clear day, and the weather made the whole drive worthwhile. From the viewpoint, ridges rolled away in dark green layers, their pale rock faces and folds picking up the light, while the lower valleys faded towards the coast.

The panorama is broad enough to put the journey in perspective. On a clear day, it reaches to the Knysna Heads and the Robberg Peninsula, and can stretch as far as Mossel Bay. We could see the long lines of the Outeniqua landscape, forest below, fynbos around us and the wide southern horizon beyond it all.

Spitzkop is not a rushed roadside stop. It is a compact forest-and-mountain drive that rewards a little patience with one of the Garden Route’s best high views. For us, it was exactly the kind of detour Sarabi was built for.
