Knysna Family Weekend — February 2023

Knysna · Wilderness · Garden Route, Western Cape

This one was about getting everybody in the same place. Aunties, uncles, cousins, friends, and the kids all came together for a Knysna weekend, and we found an Airbnb with enough rooms and beds for the whole crew to settle in comfortably.

We left at about 6 pm on Friday 17 February, following the N2 east. It was already late, so the outward leg was about getting there rather than sightseeing. The familiar road carried us over Sir Lowry’s Pass, through the Overberg and past the long, dark stretches towards the Garden Route. Knysna was waiting at the end of it.

A House Full of Family

With everybody under one roof, there was no need to pack a big programme into every hour. The best parts were the ordinary ones: children moving between rooms, cousins finding each other, adults catching up, and enough space that no one had to squeeze in. That is the advantage of a good family Airbnb - the accommodation becomes part of the weekend rather than just somewhere to sleep.

We had been to Knysna Elephant Park before, so this time we let the weekend lean into the places and views we had not properly shared with the wider family. We popped into the Garden of Eden and made time to explore around Wilderness and Knysna at an unhurried pace.

The Garden Route National Park brings together the Knysna, Wilderness, and Tsitsikamma areas, with indigenous forest, fynbos, rivers, lakes, and coastal scenery all close together. It is the kind of country that makes small stops worthwhile.

Knysna Waterfront and the Lagoon

Dinner at the Knysna Waterfront set the tone perfectly: water, boats, soft evening light, and a table busy with family conversation. The marina was full of yachts, while the lagoon caught the last of the day in long reflections.

The following day, the boat and yacht rides gave the kids a proper adventure and gave the adults a different view of the town. Inside the lagoon, the water opened out beneath the steep green slopes, and the Knysna Heads made a dramatic frame for the ride.

The photos from the water hold exactly what the weekend felt like: kids close by, family in every direction, boats passing in the lagoon, and nobody in a hurry to be anywhere else.

The Long Way Home, Properly Seen

By Sunday 19 February, it was time to turn west and follow the N2 home. On the way out, the evening drive had hidden most of the landscape. Coming back, the road gave us all of it.

Beyond Knysna, the N2 runs through the green folds of the Garden Route, past Wilderness and Sedgefield, then opens gradually into the long roads of the Southern Cape and Overberg. The route carries you through a succession of climbs, curves, forested sections, farmland, and coastal air; Sir Lowry’s Pass and Houw Hoek Pass bookend a drive that is as rewarding as the destination when you take it in during daylight.

We stopped at Map of Africa above Wilderness for that unmistakable view over the Kaaimans River valley. It was one of those reminders that the road home does not have to be the quiet end of a trip. On this run, it was part of the reward.

We made it back home on the 19th with the usual tiredness from a short trip, but also with the feeling that comes from a weekend that did exactly what it needed to do: brought everyone together and gave us a little more of the Garden Route to remember.
