Vloedbos - December 2022

Vloedbos Guest Farm, Western Cape, South Africa

Christmas week took us to Vloedbos Vacation Resort, in the Overberg on the R326 between Caledon and Bredasdorp. We arrived on the 18th with the plan to stay through to the 25th. The drive gave way from the small-town streets of Caledon to the open, rolling Overberg, before the green resort appeared in its valley.

A Proper Family Campsite

Vloedbos sits low in the valley, surrounded by the dry slopes of the Overberg. From above the site you can see the camp lawns, swimming areas and blue waterslide gathered below, with the surrounding hills immediately beyond the trees. It is a striking setting for a resort built around family camping.

Its 56 tent and caravan sites are mostly on grass, and every site has power and a braai drum. That practical side matters on a Christmas-week trip: the camp is comfortable, meals are easy, and the setup stays useful when the weather changes. There are three ablution blocks, family bathrooms, dishwashing facilities and a laundry, so a full week away does not become hard work.

Setting up Sarabi was part of the first afternoon. The awning went up, the sides followed, and the children were straight into helping with the stakes while the groundsheet was laid out. Once the trailer kitchen was opened and the sidewalls were on, it became a proper home base: shade, a windbreak, a place for meals and enough room for the whole group to settle in.

What gives the place its holiday feel is the amount there is for children and adults to do without leaving the resort. There are cold pools and a heated pool, the supertube and speed-slide, fishing, mini-golf, paintball, pool and table tennis. The play parks, trampoline, farm animals, dirt tracks, hiking trails and seasonal train rides mean that the children can stay busy while the adults get the kind of slower camp time they came for. For anyone arriving with a capable vehicle, there is even a 4x4 track on the property. The pool area, waterslide and play equipment were all close enough to camp to make the children feel as if they had their own holiday village.

That mix is why Vloedbos works in more than one season. In the heat, the pools and slides carry the day. In cooler weather, there is still a heated pool, walking, bird watching, fishing, campfires and enough covered family time at camp to make a weekend feel like a break.

A Brief Work Detour

The only complication was work. The connectivity at camp was good enough to wait for emails and send replies, but it was not reliable enough for Teams calls or the normal always-on tools that development work needs. After two days, I headed home to get through what I needed to do properly.

Sarabi stayed behind, fully established as the family’s home base. Heinrich came to the rescue and lent me his Ford Ranger Thunder for the drive. It was my first time behind the wheel of a Ford, and as a Toyota fan I was properly impressed. The Thunder has so many of the features you would expect in a Mercedes, yet it still feels like a truck. The work detour was not part of the holiday plan, but the Ford made the drive a lot more interesting than expected.

Back to Camp

By the 23rd, the work was handled and I could rejoin the camp. Returning to a setup that is already complete is one of the quiet luxuries of a longer trip: no unpacking rush, no rebuilding the awning, just park and slip straight back into the rhythm of the place. Sarabi was now more than a trailer and awning; with the kitchen open, chairs out and the family around the table, it had become the natural place for long games, food and conversation.

The 24th was our gift exchange, a relaxed Christmas Eve moment with everyone gathered around camp. A small Christmas tree, the parcels on the table and the children waiting for the next gift gave the evening its own campsite version of Christmas. The 25th stayed equally easy-going: time around camp, the children playing, meals under the awning and one last unhurried day before packing up for home.

A Place to Return To

Vloedbos proved why it is such a strong family destination. It is close enough to be practical for a weekend, equipped enough for a proper holiday and varied enough that the days do not all have to look the same. You can spend the morning at the pools, take the children to the play areas or farm animals, put a line in the water, explore the tracks, or do none of that and simply enjoy a good campsite with the people you came with.

The week had a small interruption for work, but returning for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day made the trip feel complete. Vloedbos is a place we would happily use for a family break at any time of year.
