The Rig
The Grand Cherokee WJ is one of those vehicles that doesn’t announce itself as an overlander but quietly gets the job done. The WJ generation — 1999 to 2004 — is widely regarded as the sweet spot of the Grand Cherokee lineage: better refined than the ZJ that came before it, more capable off-road than many give it credit for, and still simple enough to work on without specialist equipment.
This is the V8 — torque on tap, and enough grunt to move the vehicle where you want it without drama.
The Build
Build details to follow.
Why the WJ?
The WJ punches above its weight in the dirt. The Quadra-Drive system with its Vari-Lok differentials handles technical terrain without needing the driver to think too hard about it — which is either a feature or a crutch depending on who you ask. Combined with solid approach and departure angles for a factory vehicle, it earns its place in the fleet.
